Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
