The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
