EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
